Viewing Event Record: A bear attacks Sir Gervase Clifton and fatally wounds his son

Abstract

In his diary, John Manningham reports that 'a bear brake loose' at a Nottinghamshire baiting and pursued the son of Sir Jarvis Clifton. While Clifton 'apposed himself with his rapier' to the bear in an attempt to save his son, he later found out that his son's injuries were fatal.
