Abstract

In their address 'To the great Variety of Readers' in the 1623 folio of Shakespeare's plays, John Heminges and Henry Condell refer to audience members who think they are 'Magistrate[s] of wit, and sit on the Stage at Black-Friers, or the Cock-pit, to arraigne Playes dailie[.]'
