Viewing Event Record: There are two bear gardens on the west bank, an old and a new: Stow

Abstract

In a manuscript version of his 'Survey', John Stow refers to two bear gardens located on the west bank: 'the olde beare garden and the newe'. 'Bears, bulls, and other beastes' are kept there, alongside the mastiffs used to bait them. The animals are often 'bayted in plots of ground scaffolded about for the beholders to stand upon saffe.'
